Immigration SA has published a list of upcoming changes for the new financial year 2014-15. Here are the pending changes that will come into effect on 1 July 2015:

1) New State Occupation List

Applicants looking for South Australia state sponsorship will have to refer to the new occupation list on 1 July to determine eligibility and additional requirements.

2) New English Requirements

ICT occupations now need to fulfil Proficient English or an overall score of Proficient Plus English.

Engineering occupations will need to meet Competent Plus English or an overall score of Proficient English.

There will also be changes to other occupations so you will need to check the new occupation list to find out occupation-specific requirements.

3) Closure of the Online Application System

The SA application system for the 190 and 489 state sponsorship will be closed at 1 p.m. (Adelaide time) on 30 June 2015. The system will only re-open at 12 p.m. on 1 July 2015. All applications that are saved or submitted WITHOUT PAYMENT will be deleted and you will need to lodge new applications. Applications submitted on 1 July 2015 or after will be subject to new state sponsorship requirements.

It is beneficial that Immigration SA has released a list of changes (although not complete) that will be in effect on 1 July 2015. This serves as a reminder to all who are looking to obtain SA state sponsorship to complete their applications and submit payment before the closure of the system. As there may be a rush for submissions near the closure, you are advised to complete the submission as early as possible before the closure date.

Immigration SA has announced the South Australian Supplementary Skilled List today which replaces the Graduate List. The Supplementary Skilled List contains 480 occupations, many of which that are not on the State Occupation List. The Supplementary Skilled List allows more occupations and different skilled workers to be sponsored by the South Australian state government. Applicants can access the Supplementary Skilled List if they:

• graduated from studies in a South Australian education institute with at least one academic year of study
• worked in a skilled occupation in South Australia for at least 12 months
• have a immediate family member (permanent resident or Australian citizen) who has resided in South Australia for 12 months or more

You must still meet the state nomination requirements for factors such as age, skills assessment, work experience, English and financial capacity. For further information please visit the Immigration SA website.

New Fees Applicable for Immigration SA State Sponsorship Applications

Immigration SA has announced that there will be fees chargeable for SA state sponsorship applications starting possibly as soon as 16 March 2015. Below is the email notification sent by Immigration SA:

It seems to be a regrettable trend that DIBP and State agencies are raising their fees.

In the short term, one response to the Immigration SA fees could be to try to lodge an application before the fees come into play, after the 15 March 2015.

South Australian International Vocational, Education and Training (VET) Graduates now considered for State Nominations

Effective from 23 December 2014, Immigration SA is including VET graduates as part of the state sponsorship programme for skilled migration visas subclass 190 and 489.  To be eligible VET graduates of South Australia will need to be:

• Currently working for 12 months or more in their nominated or closely related occupation in South Australia (minimum 20 hours per week); OR
• Currently working for 6 months or more in their nominated or closely related occupation in a country region of South Australia (minimum 20 hours per week). The country region must be outside of Greater Adelaide.

The country region of South Australia is defined by postcode and you can explore the country regions on the Immigration SA website here.

What does this mean for you?

Immigration SA has added 18 new occupations t the State Occupation list including some very common occupations – Cook, Hairdresser, Customer Service Manager and Database Administrator.

This is a major change and provides opportunities for persons all over Australia and from overseas as well.

“The South Australian Government, in collaboration with local industry, regularly conducts research to identify skill needs in the local labour market.

Immigration SA is the State Government agency responsible for international migration to South Australia.  We offer pathways to permanent residency for skilled migrants who have occupations that are in-demand.

South Australia’s occupation lists are live.  Any changes made to the lists are visible immediately, enabling you to see which occupations are currently available for state nomination.

The table below details eighteen new occupations added to the State Occupation list.

The new occupation lists

There are now two state nomination occupation list for South Australia:  the State Occupation list and the South Australian Graduate list.  

• Occupations on the State Occupation list are available to all applicants including South Australian international graduates.
• The South Australian Graduate list, previously known as the off list, is for graduates who have completed a Bachelor degree or higher in South Australia.
• The subscription functionality enables you to stay up to date with changes to the occupation lists and the news and events page as changes occur.
• The details of the relevant skills assessment authority for each occupation is now included in the lists.

Remember, to be eligible for state nomination applicants must have a positive skills assessment from the relevant authority for their nominated occupation.  Applicants must also meet all of the federal and state requirements for the visa being applying for.”
